By Emily Schulte and Emily Levenson—CNN| September 18, 2018| 2:21:03A new bill that would give taxpayers new tax breaks to buy college education is gaining traction in Congress.
While many lawmakers have been clamoring for the legislation, some lawmakers have yet to vote on it.
“It’s really not a big deal,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told CNN’s “New Day” on Monday.
“It’s not the kind of thing that’s going to affect a lot of people.”
The proposal would allow taxpayers to deduct up to $1,000 of tuition and fees from their taxes, but only if they are a parent, spouse or dependent child of a taxpayer.
The money would be used to pay for tuition, room and board and books.
The bill also would allow college students to transfer credits from high school and earn credits toward their degree.
There are currently more than 7.3 million Americans enrolled in college, with more than half of them attending community colleges.
Many of those students are struggling to pay the full cost of their education, including some who cannot afford college at all.
“The president is very concerned about the high cost of college, but I think that’s a real concern for everybody,” Gaetz said.
“That’s why we think it’s important to have a bipartisan solution. “
It’s not about the money. “

We think the President has the same kind of passion for education that we do, and so I think this is a great idea that will make a big difference.”
Gaetz is the chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which is responsible for the tax legislation.
The bill was written by Rep. Tom MacArthur (R, NJ), the chairman and ranking member of the committee.
It was introduced in the House on Monday and has already passed the House and Senate.
But the measure faces a long road in the Republican-controlled House, which could potentially stall if it doesn’t pass the Senate.
“What I would hope is that it’s taken a look at by the conference committee, which will be the Senate,” Gaetz said.
Gaetz said that the bill would not be the last such tax break that lawmakers would get, and it was a good start.
“I think the bill does a lot,” he said.
